Sometimes a road is just a road, but when I was a kid growing up in the Pacific Northwest everything in my life revolved around Washington State Route 99. Of course, it's a different road today. But it's still there and parts haven't changed too much. So come and enjoy a ride with me.

Running north to south, it'll take you anywhere you wanna go.
Across the border to Canada, or down to Mexico.
With fancy names like Evergreen Way or Aurora Avenue,
it's all depends on the town your driving through.

But it's Highway 99 past the used car lots.
Highway 99, you gotta watch for cops.
Highway 99, on a summer night with no where to go.
It's Highway 99 if you're leaving town,
Highway 99 when you're homeward bound.
Old Highway 99's the only road you need to know.

In discount store parking lots keep an eye out for the carts,
or every time you shop you'll get another ding.
Drive-thru coffee and burger joints, they make is so easy for you,
to never leave your car for anything.

They gave us the keys to a future just 'round the bend,
so that's where we headed, out on our own.
Some of us left town, while others stayed behind,
but it doesn't really matter, 'cause no one can ever go back home.
