This Burning Sun

by Peter Galperin

/
1.
(verse 1) You seem... like someone that I could love. But how can I know... you are who you say. ‘cause you... you might be crazy inside. So please tell me now... and save us the pain. (chorus) ‘cause I’ve thought this through, and all I can see... What’s normal to you, isn’t normal to me... (verse 2) You’ve said... some things that just don’t make sense, And when I ask... you can’t explain. I’ve tried... it’s hard ‘cause we’re so far apart, but now I know... we don’t think the same. (bridge) We will never see eye to eye... so let’s agree to disagree. Anything that’s good for you... is probably bad for me. And the harder you push, the harder I resist. 'cause I’ve been here before, and life’s too short... yeah, life’s too short for this...

(verse 1) There was a little man who thought he was a star, but he was nobody from the start. He bragged that he always beat the other guy, said his deals were such an art. But his neighbors didn’t like him, ‘cause he was vulgar and oh so vain... but he had money... yeah, lots of money. And everywhere else across the countryside, where they only knew him by his name. they mistook him for a straight-talking guy, and got caught up in his infamous fame. And they showed up for his rally’s, where he pointed out who to blame... and they went crazy... yeah, really crazy. (chorus) So this is how it came to be, for the little man who tried to be king of you and me. (verse 2) Those who followed him had had it tough, and they were fooled by his angry words, But his vague solutions and thoughtless plans, to many others he just seemed absurd. He had a vivid imagination, and said the worst was yet to come... but he would save them... oh yeah, he’d save them. While the experts didn’t really have a clue, and the pundits were in disarray. the people began to question out loud, was this king leading them astray. He was such a busy little fellow, breaking news every minute of the day... and they began to wonder... yeah, they really wondered. (bridge) The little King was in his castle getting ready for the night, He thought the time had come, the time was his, he thought the time was right. But in the morning when he looked outside across the golden light, he saw a sea of endless people, who had gathered for a fight. And they stood outside and jeered at him, and shouted to his face, You’re not our king, you’re not our king, you must be replaced. And that’s when everything started... to get a little better. (verse 3) ‘cause late that night while the little king slept, the people had devised a plan, a few rockets under his castle walls, they’d had enough of that nasty little man. so in the morning when he woke up, he was flying high above the land... and getting smaller... and smaller and smaller.

I Been Told 04:03
(verse 1) The fortune teller was smiling as she traced all the lines on my hand. I was hoping that this would be my lucky day. For just a few more dollars she looked deep into her crystal ball. That’s where she saw something good coming my way. (chorus) ‘cause I been told, baby, I been told. Tomorrow’s gonna bring me love, so I been told. (verse 2) The preacher he was prayin’ for all the lost souls like me, ‘cause Jesus is gonna be here any day. He said I’d better get ready, so I threw a few coins in the plate, in case the Lord is sending something good my way. (bridge) maybe there’s more to life, maybe our spirits never die, maybe we can live forever somehow. It’s so complex, and I’m just a simple kind of guy, trying to live each moment in the now.
4.
(verse 1) I used to think that time was all we had. But now I know that time is running out. Everyday there’s less of it around, It’s moving fast, at twice the speed of sound. But in the morning when I look outside, It’s always nice to see another sunny day. (and that’s okay) (chorus) ‘cause all we need... is the air we breath, and all we need... is to find some peace... and all we need... is to plant our feet... on higher ground. (verse 2) It doesn’t matter if I don’t have much today, I got enough to give a little bit away. Even if I once was better off than now, I know that less is more, but please don’t ask me how. And in the morning when I look outside, It’s always nice to see another sunny day. (bridge) Protect the ones who’ve lost the most, and bless the ones who’ve come so far. Lord give us mercy, give us hope, and help us through our darkest hour.
5.
(verse 1) The sun that warms us today will someday be forgotten. and every ray of light will vanish in the dark. The life and death of truth was a long time coming. And when it finally came, it cut right to the heart. But we’ll seek the path of least resistance, and find a source that gives us hope and love. (chorus 1) So don’t look back, please don’t look back, Baby don’t look back, ‘cause you might turn to stone. (verse 2) We’ve come this far, there’s no return tomorrow. And don’t count on finding help, we’re out here on our own. What happened to this world will not be our undoing, We never saw it coming, but someone should have known. We’ll seek the path of least resistance, and find a source that gives us hope and love. (bridge) We never thought we’d live to see this, Now we’re the last of the last to come this way, no more gods to guide or lead us, We might find heaven... but there’ll be hell to pay.
6.
(verse 1) The future’s sure bleak if you listen to the experts, But I prefer to listen to Fox news. Science says last year was the world’s hottest. When you tell me that, man, it just gives me the blues. The warning signs were just too hard for me, I couldn’t believe what I couldn’t see. (chorus 1) Hey... what can you do. Hey, what can you do. but hey, what can you do. (verse 2) They say we need to cut down on our emissions, Well blah, blah, blah, we’ve heard that before. Rising temperatures are a minor inconvenience, It’s always hotter in the summer, now it’s just a little more. The warning signs were just too hard for me, I couldn’t believe what I couldn’t see. (chorus 2) Hey... what can you do. Hey, what can you do. (The polar ice caps are melting so fast, the seas are rising a foot or two), but hey, what can you do. (bridge) Did this happen because of something that we’ve done? How did the weather turn so severe? I miss the seasons, and I hate this burning sun, How many reasons do we need to hear? (chorus 3) Hey... what can you do. Hey, what can you do. (Nature might be a little out of control, but that depends on your point of view), but hey, what can you do.

Lost Our Way 04:12
(verse 1) Whitecaps are rolling on the Hudson, A strong surge is coming in from the south. There’s a storm brewing in this river valley. Something in the air says it’s gonna get rough. The glaciers are melting, the seas are rising, The climate is changing before our very eyes. But we weren’t listening to the warnings. It’s time to stop living on the waterline. (chorus) Now pack up all our belongings and head to higher ground. Say goodbye to these sunny shores today. Someday our children’s children will turn and look around, and wonder how we lost our way. (verse 2) A howling wind blows through New York City. Empty streets are flooded at every tide. The forces of nature have finally taken over. There’s nowhere here that we can hide.
8.
(verse 1) I’m trying hard to understand what we’ve been through. I wish I had a back-up plan to get me over you. Now everything has changed for good, for better and for worse. You know I did all that I could, I tried to put you first. I thought we’d make each other better, I thought we’d always be together. (chorus) For one more smile from you. That’s all I’m asking. One more smile from you. That's all I need. One more smile from you. Something to remember. One more smile from you. Is that so hard? (verse 2) I don’t want to fight no more. I wanna wake up happy. Don’t even want to even the score. Let’s call it a draw. What’s yours is yours, and mine is mine, and leave the rest alone. Try to think of the good old times, when we shared a home. I thought we’d make each other better, I thought we’d always be together. (bridge) I gave you all that I could give someone I gave my heart and soul to you. If there’s a chance to fall in love again, there is one thing... that you can do...

about

Like a 21st century Phil Ochs, redefining the significance of the modern day pop musician – alien-nation in the cyberage, the infamous 2016 Presidential election, and the effects of global warming on a planet poisoned by bad science are all put under Galperin's musical microscope, with it's urgent lyrics and profound pop melodies.
